Our modules

Our modules offer a complete solution for schools preparing their pupils for the rigours of the Pre-Test. Designed to be as close to the real tests as pupils can experience they will develop valuable skills and build self-confidence in the process.

Verbal Reasoning

Verbal reasoning is understanding and reasoning using concepts framed in words. Senior schools aim to evaluate a pupil’s ability to think constructively, rather than at simple fluency or vocabulary recognition. The skills required by a pupil to perform well in verbal reasoning tests can be broken down into four separate categories that are covered in an array of exercises: Our comprehension exercises develop a pupil’s ability to understand and analyse written information. Our Critical reasoning questions encourage a pupil to analyse written information and use it to make correct conclusions based solely on the information they find in the text. Our grammar exercises help develop a pupil’s ability to spell correctly, know how to use correct tenses and form logical sentences. Finally, our vocabulary question sets that are deliberately worded difficultly and use long complicated routes to communicate information including, for example, use of the double negative, to help develop a pupil’s ability to think constructively.

Non-Verbal Reasoning

In non-verbal reasoning (NVR) diagrams are used for expressing the ideas instead of using numbers and words. Our exercises show a series of figures arranged in a sequence or pattern and then the missing figure is required to identified or the next in the sequence. Non-verbal reasoning questions are believed to be the best indicator to a senior school of general intelligence and don’t rely on pupils’ knowledge of English or Mathematics.

Our tests involve identifying relationship, similarities and differences between shapes and patterns, recognizing visual sequences and relationship between objects and remembering this. The exercises help develop a pupil’s ability to analyse and solve complex problems without relying upon or being limited by language skills As these tests don’t require reading they can give a senior school insight into the abilities of those pupils who might otherwise find reading and thinking verbally more challenging.

The core topics are based on the National Curriculum syllabus for Key Stage 2 Maths at Level 5.

Senior schools use reading comprehension to determine a pupil’s ability to read text, process it and understand its meaning. A child’s individual’s ability to comprehend text is cognitively demanding and influenced by their traits and skills, one of which is the ability to make inferences. If word recognition is difficult, pupils use too much of their processing capacity to read individual words, which interferes with their ability to comprehend what is read. In addition to our English module that help pupils address these challenges, there are a number of approaches to improve reading comprehension, including improving one’s vocabulary and reading strategies.

What is Pre-testing?

What is involved in the pre-tests?

The tests deliver a standardised measure of ability and attainment and include Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, English and Mathematics. They are in a multiple-choice format and take about two-and-a-half hours to complete.

When are the tests taken?

Common Pre-Tests are usually taken between October and June when a child is in Year 6 (or sometimes Year 7) of preparatory school when they are aged between 10 and 12. The tests can be taken together or at separate times either in the candidate’s own school or at the senior school for which he or she is entered. The Common Pre-Tests are designed to give senior independent schools information about pupils’ attainment and potential, prior to them taking Common Entrance in Year 8. Results are available to all senior schools which register candidates, so a child need only sit the test once for a range of senior schools.

Preparing for the tests

School Pretests software offers specific preparation for the Common Pre-Tests, which are designed to identify potential as well as attainment and enable candidates to understand what they have to do.

Entering candidates

Candidates should be registered by senior schools through the Independent Schools ExaminationS Board (ISEB). Once in receipt of account details, senior schools usually forward individual candidate login details to the relevant test centre (normally the preparatory school that the candidate attends). Taking the test in the preparatory school helps reduce anxiety and avoid pupils needed to attend separate pre-tests at different senior schools where they are registered.

If a child is registered at more than one school that uses the ISEB pre-test, they will still take the tests only once. This one set of results will be shared with all schools registering that candidate. Should a pupil take more than one test, the first set of results will still stand. Only senior schools that have registered the candidate will have access to the assessment data.
